As a protest against the finance department`s lackadaisical attitude to the Nagpur Zilla Parishad (ZP), around 11,000 of its employees have decided to go on an indefinite strike in January 2009. The finance department has failed to tally its transactions for the financial year 2007-2008 with the state treasury, which has put the ZP employees in trouble because they have not received any reimbursements or loans on time. Adding to their woes, the state treasury issued a notice threatening to stop processing all bills and reimbursements connected with the ZP from 20 November 2008.
According to the representatives of the ZP employees, they will go on an indefinite strike if the reconciliation talks fail. Currently, the reconciliation talks have been scheduled for 31 December.
The employees under the Nagpur ZP going on strike may cause unprecedented chaos in the district, especially in the rural areas.
